Dental Cleanings and Exams

Dental team of dentists and hygienists working together at a modern practice

Overview

At Happy Teeth, Dr. Bruce King helps patients maintain healthy smiles through expert dental cleanings and exams in Los Angeles. The dentist and our team focus on preventing problems before they start by removing plaque, tartar, and bacteria that cause decay and gum disease. Regular checkups allow us to spot issues early, keeping your teeth and gums in top shape. We tailor every visit to your unique oral health needs while ensuring you feel comfortable throughout the process.

Why Regular Cleanings Matter More Than You Think

Plaque builds up constantly, especially in hard-to-reach places. If the patient skips professional cleanings, plaque hardens into tartar, which can cause cavities and gum inflammation. The dentist removes tartar that brushing can’t reach. Cleanings also prevent bad breath by eliminating odor-causing bacteria. Patients who get regular cleanings reduce their risk of tooth loss and serious gum infections.

Cleanings for Kids: Building Healthy Habits Early

We focus on making cleanings a positive experience for kids to encourage lifelong oral health. Regular visits help prevent early cavities and keep baby teeth strong.

  • Remove plaque and tartar buildup to protect developing teeth
  • Monitor growth and eruption of permanent teeth
  • Teach proper brushing and flossing techniques
  • Detect early signs of tooth decay or gum issues

Cleanings for Teens: Tackling Active Smiles

Teenagers face unique dental challenges as their permanent teeth settle in. Cleanings help keep braces or other dental work clean and prevent gum problems during this active phase.

  • Remove plaque around braces, wires, or retainers
  • Prevent gingivitis linked to hormonal changes
  • Check for cavities in hard-to-reach spots
  • Reinforce good hygiene habits during busy schedules

Cleanings for Adults and Seniors: Protecting Your Smile for Life

Adults and seniors benefit from regular cleanings that address wear, gum recession, and other age-related dental concerns. We tailor care to keep smiles healthy and functional.

  • Manage plaque to prevent gum disease and tooth loss
  • Screen for oral cancer and other health issues
  • Care for restorations like crowns, bridges, or implants
  • Support overall health by maintaining oral hygiene

The Exam: A Full Health Check for Your Smile

The dentist inspects teeth, gums, and soft tissues for signs of trouble during exams. We use digital X-rays and oral cameras to find cavities, bone loss, or infections that hide beneath the surface. The staff checks your bite and jaw for issues like grinding or TMJ disorders. Early detection lets us treat problems faster and avoid more extensive dental work.

What to Expect During Your Cleaning and Exam

Our hygienist starts by gently removing plaque and tartar with special instruments. They polish your teeth to smooth surfaces, making plaque less likely to stick. The dentist then examines your mouth and reviews X-rays if taken. Patients typically feel little discomfort and leave with a fresh, clean feeling.

How Often Should You Come In?

Most patients benefit from cleanings and exams every six months. However, some people need visits every three to four months due to a higher risk of gum disease or other concerns. The dentist customizes your recall schedule based on your oral health, lifestyle, and medical history.

Signs You Shouldn’t Skip Your Visit

Watch for early warning signs that mean you need a dental cleaning and exam soon:

  • Bleeding or swollen gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Tooth sensitivity or pain
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Visible plaque buildup or tartar

Tools of the Trade: Modern Tech for Spotless Smiles

We use the latest technology to enhance cleanings and exams. Digital X-rays reduce radiation exposure and give clear images. Intraoral cameras let you see problem areas in real time. Ultrasonic scalers make tartar removal quicker and gentler. These tools help the dentist provide thorough, effective care.

Home Care Tips to Boost Your Visit

Good habits between visits help keep your mouth healthy and clean. We recommend brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and rinsing with an antimicrobial mouthwash if advised. The dentist also suggests diet tips to avoid excess sugar and acid that harm enamel.

How Cleanings and Exams Fit Into Your Overall Dental Plan

We treat cleanings and exams as the foundation for your smile’s long-term health. They prepare your teeth for cosmetic or restorative treatments like fillings, crowns, or whitening. Regular visits help us track your progress and adjust care as needed. Our team works with you to build a plan that keeps your smile strong for life.

Came in dr. King’s last week for an emergency wisdom tooth extraction. Unfortunately he was unable to do the surgery since the tooth was severely impacted. His team, with absurd quickness, was able to find an oral surgeon 15 minutes away to do the surgery. Following the surgery, I came back to Dr. King a week later to get a root canal done. Painless visit and out in an hour. He and his assistants did a fantastic job explaining what needed to be done and why it needed to be done as well. Over 30 years of experience says a lot about your work! Excited to get my smile back! Thanks Dr. King! You and your team!

I was in pain and needed to see a dentist ASAP. I called over and was able to be seen a half an hour. The staff was very efficient and friendly. They took great care of me and fixed me up right away. They communicated everything with me every step of the way from the procedure to cost to me and everything in between. I am grateful that they were able to see me so quickly. I had to get a root canal, but I didn’t feel a thing. A great staff of people and a great dentist.
